Tang Expands Cottonwood’s Global Capital Markets Platform
Managing director helped secure $1B special situations raise while building international investor relationships
Tang Tang has helped expand Cottonwood Group’s access to global capital by combining investor education and relationship development with systems designed to support a growing real estate investment business.
As managing director and head of capital markets, Tang oversees fundraising, syndication, investor relations and capital allocation. Since 2021, he has spearheaded or supported efforts securing more than $1.5 billion in third-party commitments for U.S. real estate investments.
Most recently, he helped lead fundraising for Cottonwood’s Real Estate Special Situations Strategy, which concluded in 2025 with $1 billion in commitments, double its original $500 million target.
His international work includes establishing Cottonwood’s presence in Korea. In 2018, the firm had no presence or capital partners there. His efforts have since generated more than $300 million in investments and commitments from Korean investors, including a $50 million institutional commitment in late 2024.
Tang has also helped international investors evaluate transaction structures unfamiliar to them. Those efforts included participation in Cottonwood’s 1.3-million-square-foot EchelonSeaport development, introducing Korean capital to a project still under construction.
Alongside fundraising, Tang helped develop and implement a new customer relationship management system and capital-raising tracking process as Cottonwood outgrew its previous infrastructure.
The initiative took more than eight months from development through rollout. It centralized investor information, activity, planning and responsibilities, allowing the team to assign tasks, reduce duplication and give the CEO direct access to information supporting strategic decisions.
Tang has also helped expand the capital markets team from one professional to five, increasing its capacity to support fundraising and investor relationships.
Promoted at the end of 2024, he became Cottonwood’s youngest managing director. He also serves as a voting member of the firm’s investment committee.
One ongoing project involves developing a distribution and fundraising partnership with an overseas bank. Over nearly two years, changing regulations and the introduction of a product relatively new to the market required the team to revise its approach at least three times.
Tang helped navigate those changes and maintain progress. The partnership is nearing completion, with fundraising targeted to begin in January 2027.
His professional development work extends beyond Cottonwood. He co-founded the Chinese-Canadian Leaders Foundation and supported its activities from 2016 to 2020, helping students transition into the workforce.
The organization provided scholarships, keynote events, fireside chats and career programming connecting students with mentorship and professional opportunities.
Tang’s broader approach emphasizes sustained institutional relationships over individual fundraising transactions. At Cottonwood, that has meant expanding international engagement while strengthening the team and operating infrastructure behind capital formation.
His work connects two priorities for a growing private markets business: helping investors understand opportunities and building the processes needed to support those relationships over time across markets and investment strategies as the platform expands.
