Change Agent: Andrew Krei, Crescent Grove Advisors

We’re talking to leaders about significant changes in the industry and their organizations – progress regarding product, process, technology, or culture. We’re curious about the how and the why. And we’re asking about what changes are next.

Andrew Krei, co-CIO of Barret Upton Capital Partners and Crescent Grove Advisors expressed his thoughts on a recent organizational achievement that most satisfied him and what helped it to be successful. He also addressed key components needed for notable development inside his company and the industry.

Charting a New Course: How do you navigate the transition from established practices to pioneering new frontiers within your organization?

Our organization is continuously evolving and constantly seeking new ways to better serve our clients—often through the thoughtful use of technology or other innovative solutions. Transitioning from established practices to new approaches requires a culture of flexibility and learning, along with a team that’s nimble and creative.

Our priority is understanding our clients’ evolving needs and proactively ensuring that we have the right tools to meet those needs. This not only creates value for our existing clients but also positions us to seize new opportunities and maintain a competitive edge in the marketplace. Barrett Upton Capital Partners is the embodiment of these characteristics in action.

A Triumph to Celebrate: What recent organizational accomplishment brings you the most satisfaction? What specific challenges did it overcome, and what key factors led to its success?

In 2023, we launched Barrett Upton Capital Partners to provide clients with access to unique private investments. Our team had built great relationships with top-tier managers over our decades of experience, but these managers often had high minimums, were capacity constrained, or were not accepting new investors. To overcome these hurdles, we needed a thoughtful and innovative approach.

By creating a platform that provides turnkey exposures at low minimums, investors can achieve diversification across asset classes and vintage years—just like the most sophisticated institutions and family offices. This accomplishment reflects our commitment to providing exceptional investment opportunities and showcases our ability to meet the needs of our growing client base.

Catalysts for Change: What are the essential elements for significant progress within your organization and the industry?

At the heart of every decision within our organization is the goal of creating better outcomes for clients. We have maintained an entrepreneurial ethos and embrace innovation in pursuit of that goal—from our client advisors to our analysts and operations team.

Markets are dynamic, so it is critical we remain agile and act collaboratively to drive progress. It is also important that we articulate our vision for clients, ensuring they feel invested in the process. By aligning all stakeholders around our client-centric goals, we will continue to make significant advances.
