S2G Ventures Launches $300M Climate Tech Fund

S2G Ventures, a multi-stage investor in food, agriculture, ocean and clean energy, has launched a $300 million Special Opportunities fund that will offer flexible financing for businesses making positive long-term social and environmental impact.

The new fund, which brings assets under management to $2 billion, “has flexibility around risk profile, tenor and structure and enables the firm to invest across the capital spectrum through debt, equity or hybrid investments with a focus on businesses with assets, cashflows, contracts or leases to provide downside protection,” said S2G.

“There is a need for a different type of capital in the climate tech market to complement venture capital and private equity,” said Andrea Woodside, principal, Special Opportunities fund.

Led by Sanjeev Krishnan, senior managing director and chief investment officer, S2G Ventures has already made six investments out of the fund, most recently in Circulus, a low-density polyethylene recycler, and Service 1st Financial, a fintech, innovation, and training company.

In 2020 S2G was the most active food-focused venture capital fund in the world, investing in companies like Beyond Meat and Sweetgreen.

Chicago-based S2G is part of Builders Private Capital, the direct investment team of Builders Vision, an impact platform created by Walmart heir Lukas Walton.
