Northleaf Closes $450M Specialty Finance Fund
Northleaf Capital Partners has closed its inaugural asset-based specialty finance fund with approximately $450 million in commitments, expanding the private markets manager’s credit platform into investments designed to generate returns less closely tied to economic and public market cycles.
The total includes commitments to Northleaf Asset-Based Specialty Finance and co-investment vehicles investing alongside the fund. NASF targets specialized assets such as entertainment royalties, legal finance, healthcare receivables, and factoring.
“Asset-based specialty finance offers a complementary set of return drivers compared to many traditional credit strategies, combining attractive cash yield with low-correlation assets and strong downside protections,” said David Ross, managing director and head of private credit at Northleaf.
The fund builds on Northleaf’s broader specialty finance platform, which has invested approximately $1.4 billion across 21 transactions since 2018.
Unlike conventional direct lending, which generally relies on a company’s cash flow to repay debt, asset-based specialty finance depends more heavily on the performance and value of specific collateral or receivables.
Northleaf recently appointed JD Gettmann managing director and global head of Asset-Based Specialty Finance to lead the strategy’s continued expansion.
Gettmann joined from MidCap Financial, where he co-founded and led the lender-finance business. He has more than 20 years of experience and has deployed over $15 billion across commercial and consumer asset classes.
Northleaf’s specialty finance team will invest across the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia while drawing on the firm’s broader private-markets sourcing, underwriting and portfolio-management capabilities. The firm manages over $32 billion in private equity and venture capital, private credit and infrastructure.
