Moody’s, Allvue Launch Early-Warning Credit Risk Model for Private Credit
Moody’s Corp. and Allvue Systems have launched a credit risk model designed to give private credit investors and lenders earlier warning of borrower stress, including covenant waivers and payment-in-kind arrangements that can precede missed payments or defaults.
The Moody’s Analytics EDF-X Private Credit Model separately estimates the likelihood of “hard” credit events, such as missed payments, and “soft” events that may signal deterioration beforehand. The companies said that distinction offers a more detailed view of risks building within portfolios.
The launch comes as Moody’s projects private credit assets will approach $4 trillion by 2030, increasing demand for monitoring tools tailored to the market.
The model draws on de-identified borrower performance data contributed by Allvue. According to the companies, it is Moody’s first model calibrated directly on observed private credit performance, complementing existing models covering private companies across broader lending markets.
“In private credit, the signals that matter often emerge before a missed payment or default,” said Christina Kosmowski, CEO of Moody’s Analytics.
Allvue CEO Marc Scheipe said private credit’s growth has outpaced the infrastructure used to monitor it, creating a need for expanded data and analytics capabilities.
The model is intended to support portfolio monitoring, manager evaluation, investment selection and capital allocation. It joins Moody’s private credit offerings, including EDF-X CreditGradient, which provides model-based risk signals for unrated borrowers.
