Merrill Lynch Expands In-House Trainee Program, Adds ‘Client Associate’ Role

Merrill Lynch is ramping up its in-house advisor training development program. The firm expects about 75% of its 2,400 trainees to graduate from the program.

That figure represents over double the industry’s advisor-related programs, which generally accelerate about 30% of candidates, John Towey, client services executive for Merrill, explained Tuesday during the wealth unit’s quarterly media call.

As Merrill aims to address the mass growth in generational assets, the unit has introduced four new enhancements to its advisor trainee program, based on feedback from trainees, Merrill’s advisors, and market leadership.

The wealth unit will be granting trainees earlier access to its broader suite of wealth management products and additional resources, including business development support.

The move aims to help trainees develop a “broader understanding of how we serve clients and cost investing, banking, lending, and planning,” Towery said.

As clients seek more financial advice and personalized services, Merrill says trainees enrolled in the program will “soon” be able to join existing advisor teams, which is one of the four enhancements the wealth unit plans to roll out to its program.

“Team-based practices are increasingly how advisors serve clients and build enduring businesses,” Towey said. “By allowing trainees to join them earlier, [it] will help them contribute more quickly while supporting succession planning for established teams.”

Merrill also touched on extending its business development support for advisors. This comes as the industry is aiming to boost its strategies for the next generation of talent.

To complete the firm’s refinement of the program, Merrill has introduced a new advisor development role within the program that centers on providing trainees with exposure to client services.

The role will allow advisor trainees to launch their careers as client associates at Merrill, which is designed to help them gain a better understanding of Merrill’s day-to-day operations before transitioning into an advisor role.

“This role creates an additional entry point into the profession and allows trainees to begin their careers working in a Merrill office alongside advisors,” Towey stated.

The ADP CA program initially launched with 25 trainees and is currently in the ADP FA program, Towey said.

In the second quarter, Merrill reported that its client balances grew to $4.1 trillion, marking a 12% year-over-year increase. Additionally, Merrill says net new client asset flows decreased 4% year-over-year from $14.3 billion to $13.7 billion.

Merrill’s assets under management reached a record high of $1.8 trillion, which is up 18% year-over-year, and its net income jumped 42% to $1.4 billion for the Global Wealth and Investment Management division that includes Merrill and parent company Bank of America’s private bank.
