Macquarie Asset Management Launches Summerland Storage Partners
Macquarie Asset Management (MAM) has announced the launch of Summerland Storage Partners, a self-storage platform based in New York. The initiative will be owned by a MAM-managed fund alongside the platform’s leadership team and is designed to build a strategically located, geographically diverse portfolio of self-storage assets across key U.S. markets.
Summerland is led by a team of industry veterans, all formerly of Life Storage, a prominent real estate investment trust in the self-storage sector. The founding executive team includes David Dodman (CEO), Jonathan Attea (CIO), and Michael Rogers (COO).
Backed by one of Canada’s largest pension investors, the platform intends to capitalize on fragmentation in the self-storage industry, identifying acquisition opportunities in a space known for its resiliency, demographic-driven demand, and low correlation to traditional real estate cycles.
“We view the self-storage industry as a robust, recession-resistant sector with growth potential, driven by rising consumer demand and the trend toward smaller living spaces,” said James Fogarty, Head of U.S. Real Estate for MAM. “This platform gives us a capital-efficient way to establish a meaningful foothold.”
Dodman added that Summerland will pursue “shrewd” acquisitions to build scale quickly, focusing on assets that can benefit from professionalized operations and increased institutional ownership.
Macquarie Asset Management, which oversees approximately $588.1 billion in assets, is a division of Macquarie Group, a global financial services provider known for its deep expertise in infrastructure and real assets.
