Independent Broker/Dealer Channel Tightens Grip on Market as Consolidation Accelerates

The independent broker/dealer (IBD) sector is undergoing a dramatic transformation, as a wave of mergers and acquisitions continues to concentrate market power among a handful of dominant players, according to The Cerulli Report—U.S. Broker/Dealer Marketplace 2025. Over the past three years, the IBD segment has experienced the highest level of consolidation across wealth management channels, propelling it to the forefront of industry growth.

The report found that advisor-managed assets in the IBD channel grew more than 21% year over year, outpacing both captive broker/dealers and registered investment advisors (RIAs). IBDs now represent nearly 20% of the nation’s financial advisor headcount and 16% of total industry assets, a sign of how consolidation is reshaping both market share and business models.

“Assets and advisors have increasingly become concentrated in the hands of the very largest IBDs,” said Michael Rose, director at Cerulli Associates. “The five largest broker/dealers now oversee more than 80% of all IBD-channel assets.”

Over the last decade, the number of active IBDs has fallen by more than one-third, dropping from 124 in 2014 to just 79 today. The trend has altered the industry’s competitive structure, with mid-sized firms struggling to keep pace with the technology investments, compliance infrastructure, and home-office support that larger firms can afford. ““We believe that mid-tier IBDs could be challenged to match the platform capabilities and resources offered by the largest firms, especially with the investments in platforms and home-office support capabilities the larger firms are able to offer,” added Rose.

Cerulli’s data also highlights why advisors continue to flock to independent affiliation models, including both IBDs and RIAs. Key motivators include higher payout potential (91%), the ability to build long-term enterprise value (75%), and greater professional autonomy (73%)—all hallmarks of the independent advice model.

Still, opportunities remain for smaller and mid-tier firms that maintain a focused niche strategy and personalized culture. “Many IBD advisors prefer smaller, more boutique cultures, and the ability to have a direct line to senior decision makers,” Rose said.
