Bruce Markets Plans Weekend Stock Trading, Backed by PEAK6 and Robinhood

Bruce Markets plans to extend U.S. equity trading through weekends, a move that would give investors access to selected stocks and exchange-traded funds 24 hours a day, seven days a week if regulators approve the initiative.

The Chicago-based operator of Bruce ATS said it has secured strategic investments led by majority owner PEAK6 Investments and Robinhood Markets. Existing investors include Apex Fintech Solutions, Fidelity Investments, Nasdaq Ventures, NH Investment & Securities, tastytrade and Webull.

Bruce Markets expects to introduce the weekend session in the coming months. It currently operates an alternative trading system that facilitates overnight U.S. equity trading from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Eastern time. Nasdaq will provide trading technology under the expansion, while Apex Clearing, a unit of Apex Fintech Solutions, will provide clearing, carrying and custody services.

Robinhood said it plans to make the weekend capability available initially for a curated selection of U.S. stocks and ETFs across account types. The brokerage already offers extended 24-hour trading for selected securities from 8 p.m. Sunday through 8 p.m. Friday, using alternative trading systems for overnight order execution.

“Market-moving news does not wait for Monday’s open, and soon, neither will investors,” Bruce Markets chief executive officer Jason Wallach, said.

The initiative comes as exchanges and regulators examine longer trading hours. The SEC held a roundtable in September on the transition to 24-hour equity markets. Chairman Paul Atkins said expanded hours could improve global access, liquidity and investor responsiveness, but stressed that market infrastructure, settlement, surveillance and investor-protection systems must function reliably at all hours.

Weekend trading may also carry risks. Liquidity can be thinner when major exchanges and institutional participants are less active, potentially producing wider bid-ask spreads and sharper price swings. Bruce ATS uses price-band controls for overnight trading, and Robinhood says it will begin weekend access with a limited security list.

The weekend service would operate on Bruce ATS, not the NYSE or Nasdaq, and remains subject to regulatory review.

The move goes further than the major exchanges’ plans. Cboe has filed to launch near-24/5 U.S. equities trading in December, and NYSE and Nasdaq expect to launch similar offerings in late 2026. Infrastructure is catching up as well: the securities information processors plan to adopt a 24-hour model with a one-hour pause, with implementation proposed for December 2026.
