Barings Names Brian Maute Head of U.S. Wealth

Barings has appointed Brian Maute to the newly created position of head of U.S. Wealth as the alternative asset manager seeks to broaden access to its investment strategies through financial advisers and other intermediaries.

Maute will oversee U.S. wealth distribution across registered investment advisers, broker-dealers, private banks, family offices and wealth-management platforms. He will report to Ilena Coyle, head of North America insurance and intermediary distribution.

“As demand for alternative investments continues to grow across the wealth channel, Brian’s leadership and deep understanding of the intermediary market will help accelerate our efforts to serve advisers and their clients,” Coyle said.

Maute will work with Barings’ investment, product, marketing and distribution teams to develop investment solutions and educational resources. The firm’s platform encompasses credit, real assets, capital solutions and emerging markets.

He joins Barings after more than 15 years at DWS Group, where he most recently served as head of U.S. Wealth and CEO of DWS Distributors. Maute previously established and led DWS’ U.S. Wealth Alternative Investments Division. Earlier in his career, he held distribution leadership positions at Invesco and Van Kampen Investments.

Barings managed $502 billion as of June 30, up from $481 billion at the end of March. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based firm employs more than 2,000 professionals and serves over 1,400 external clients, according to Barings.

Barings is a subsidiary of MassMutual, with Japanese insurer MS&AD holding a minority investment.
