ALT+J Holdings Launches With $1.5B Across Five Investments

ALT+J Holdings has launched with five platform investments representing a combined $1.5 billion in assets under management, establishing a new private investment firm and multifamily office focused on the lower middle market.

The firm will pursue control recapitalizations, founder transitions, family-owned business successions, corporate carve-outs and special situations. Its strategy centers on partnering with established companies and upgrading their technology infrastructure through modern software and artificial intelligence capabilities.

ALT+J will target services, consumer and traditional industry businesses generating $20 million to $100 million in annual revenue and $5 million to $15 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. The firm expects to make investments of at least $12.5 million.

“Our mission is to invest in businesses that sustain our nation’s communities, deploying patient capital, operational experience and targeted technology to spur innovation,” said co-founder Jamey Edwards, who will serve as president and operating partner.

Edwards has founded and operated businesses across the health care and technology sectors. He said ALT+J represents an expansion of the founders’ previous work in housing and health care into additional industries that support local communities.

At launch, ALT+J’s portfolio spans housing, consumer retail, energy, impact investing and senior living. The investments include a national rent-to-own retailer; a Small Business Investment Company fund providing capital to founder- and family-owned businesses; a private energy company acquiring and operating U.S. assets; and an active-adult retirement community covering nearly 1,400 acres and housing more than 6,000 residents.

ALT+J plans to add investment strategies over time, including venture capital, growth equity and structured capital.
