OpenAI, Broadcom Partner on 10-GW Custom AI Accelerator Initiative
OpenAI and Broadcom Inc. have announced a strategic collaboration to develop and deploy 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators, marking one of the most ambitious infrastructure initiatives in the artificial intelligence era. Under the agreement, OpenAI will design the accelerators and systems, while Broadcom will lead the development, manufacturing, and deployment of the hardware and networking components.
The new partnership represents a pivotal step in OpenAI’s ongoing effort to vertically integrate its AI stack—embedding learnings from frontier model development directly into the hardware that powers them. By designing its own chips and systems, OpenAI aims to unlock greater efficiency, intelligence, and scalability across its infrastructure. The racks, which will be scaled entirely using Broadcom’s Ethernet and advanced connectivity solutions, are designed to handle the exponential growth in computational demand driven by OpenAI’s expanding user base—now reaching 800 million weekly active users.
The companies have signed a term sheet to deploy racks incorporating OpenAI’s accelerators alongside Broadcom’s high-performance networking architecture. These systems will be rolled out across OpenAI’s own facilities as well as partner data centers worldwide, reinforcing the AI leader’s capacity to support both research and commercial-scale deployment of next-generation models.
“Developing our own accelerators adds to the broader ecosystem of partners all building the capacity required to push the frontier of AI to provide benefits to all humanity,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI.
“Broadcom’s collaboration with OpenAI signifies a pivotal moment in the pursuit of artificial general intelligence,” added Hock Tan, President and CEO of Broadcom Inc.
According to the announcement, deployments are expected to begin in the second half of 2026 and complete by the end of 2029.
In recent weeks, OpenAI has signed supply and infrastructure agreements with Advanced Micro Devices, Oracle, Samsung, and SK Hynix. Just last month, the company struck a separate mega-deal with Nvidia to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of data centers powered by Nvidia chips — alongside a potential $100 billion equity investment by Nvidia in OpenAI.
