AMD, OpenAI Forge Partnership for Six-Gigawatt AI Compute Deployment

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and OpenAI have announced a sweeping strategic partnership that will see OpenAI deploy six gigawatts of AMD graphics processing units (GPUs) over a multi-year, multi-generation period. The rollout will begin in the second half of 2026 with one gigawatt of AMD’s next-generation Instinct MI450 Series GPUs.

As part of the agreement, AMD has issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD stock, vesting upon the achievement of both financial and operational milestones. These include sustained increases in AMD’s share price as well as OpenAI’s successful technical and commercial execution required to scale AMD’s AI deployments. If fully realized, OpenAI’s holdings could amount to roughly a 10% ownership stake in AMD.

“We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver AI compute at massive scale,” said AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su. “This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win — enabling the world’s most ambitious AI buildout and advancing the entire AI ecosystem.”

The deal is expected to generate “tens of billions of dollars in AI revenue annually” for AMD over time, according to the company. The partnership underscores OpenAI’s broader infrastructure expansion, as the ChatGPT developer commits hundreds of billions of dollars to scaling its compute footprint.

In recent weeks, OpenAI has signed supply and infrastructure agreements with Oracle, Samsung, and SK Hynix. Just two weeks earlier, the company struck a separate mega-deal with Nvidia to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of data centers powered by Nvidia chips — alongside a potential $100 billion equity investment by Nvidia in OpenAI.
