General Atlantic Buys Actis
Private equity giant General Atlantic has acquired London-based sustainable infrastructure investor Actis, creating an investment platform with approximately $96 billion in combined assets under management.
General Atlantic said Actis will become its sustainable infrastructure arm and will continue to be led by chairman and senior partner Torbjorn Caesar.
Actis, which manages about $12.5 billion in assets specializing in energy transition, digital transition, and supply chain transformation, was a long-time emerging markets investor before rebranding as a sustainable infrastructure investor several years ago.
“With the addition of Actis, we are taking a significant step forward to add a sustainable investment capability which positions General Atlantic to capture this opportunity set for our investors,” said Bill Ford, chairman and CEO of General Atlantic.
The deal marks the latest in a series of moves by major asset managers to boost their capabilities to target a rapidly growing infrastructure opportunity set driven by themes including energy transition and decarbonization, including last week’s acquisition by BlackRock of infrastructure giant GIP for $12.5 billion.
General Atlantic, founded in 1980, has invested more than $60 billion in global growth companies. In addition to its flagship growth equity strategy, the firm’s investments span credit and climate solutions.
