Canapi Ventures Raises $750M Fintech Fund

Canapi Ventures, a Washington, DC-based fintech venture capital firm, closed its second fund at $750 million, a 15% increase from the firm’s flagship fundraise which closed at $545 million in 2020.

This latest capital infusion brings Canapi’s total assets under management to over $1.4 billion.

Canapi Alliance, the firm’s 70-strong network of banks, financial partner institutions, and investors across North America, backed the fund, which invests in seed to growth.

Canapi intends to keep its strategic investment approach while widening its reach to include other possibilities and challenges confronting the financial and associated industries, such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the convergence of financial services and climate technologies.

The firm has already begun investing the latest vehicle in companies such as AI creation infrastructure DynamoFL, enterprise browser platform Island, and Crux Climate, a transferable tax credit management system.

Canapi stated that it is “stage-flexible,” preferring series A to B, but would collaborate with entrepreneurs as early as ideation, and that it strives to finance diverse startups, with 61% of its portfolio founders being minorities, women, or veterans.

“Our connectivity in Washington and to its regulators has allowed us to help our companies better understand and comply with complex requirements while building alongside founders to maximize impact,” said Canapi managing partner Chip Mahan.

The team has offices in New York City, led by general partner Jeff Reitman, as well as San Francisco, led by general partner Tom Davis.
