Susan Wojcicki Is Stepping Down after Nine Years as YouTube CEO
Susan Wojcicki is stepping down from her role as CEO of YouTube after running the video streaming giant for nine years. YouTube’s new leader will be Neal Mohan, one of Wojcicki’s longtime lieutenants who has worked at Google for 15 years as chief product officer.
Wojcicki, the company’s 16th official employee, announced her departure in a memo to staff. The YouTube Blog features “A personal update from Susan” that announces she’ll be stepping down to “start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I’m passionate about.”
Youtube is owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet. Wojcicki’s relationship with Google founders and top Alphabet shareholders Larry Page and Sergey Brin goes back to 1998. Wojcicki rented Page and Brin her garage as a workspace when the two were developing their search engine.
YouTube became increasingly important to Google during Wojcicki’s time, who is credited with its acquisition in 2006, and Alphabet, the holding company that houses both. In 2022, YouTube generated $29.2 billion in ad sales, more than 10% of Alphabet’s total revenue.
Wojcicki will remain at YouTube for “the short term” to help with the transition and has agreed with Google CEO Sundar Pichai to take on an advisory role across Google and Alphabet.
